Behind the Scenes of “How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying” with Costume Designer Catherine Zuber

Catherine Zuber is a costume design for Broadway’s revival of How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying. She studied costume design at Yale School of Drama. She has been referred to as “one of theater’s most sought-after costume designers on both coasts.”

How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying is a musical with music and lyrics by Frank Loesser and book by Abe Burrows, Jack Weinstock, and Willie Gilbert, based on Shepherd Mead’s 1952 book of the same name. The story concerns young, ambitious J. Pierrepont Finch who, with the help of the book How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying, rises from window washer to chairman of the board of the World Wide Wicket Company.

Zuber’s design is a bright and flashy take on 1950s business attire. In the video below, Zuber and her team describe taking the show from an idea to fruition, explaining renderings, swatches, and even quick-rigging secrets.

With actors like Matthew Broderick, Daniel Ratcliff, and Nick Jonas taking the lead role in the current revival, many community, regional and school theaters have added it to their own season.
